Phantom Star is now out!

November 25, 2015 by RenegadeScribe Leave a Comment

eecWoooo, it’s finally out! The first chapter of Phantom Star can be found here. So that means I now have two original stories and the translated work going on. I still have at least two more coming online soon so that will have at least four serialized works plus one translated work.

Yes, I must be insane, but I’m having fun while falling into the abyss. ^_^

Beta Readers Wanted!

November 23, 2015 by RenegadeScribe Leave a Comment

TheFuckamIReadingThings are going well on the site and the stories are coming along. In fact with weekly chapters of Drow Story being posted, I will start with Phantom Star shortly as well, followed by Memories of Ys and finally Proof of Self.

Even though I know there isn’t much traffic on the comments (except for the translated works) I hope you’re enjoying them as much as I do writing them. If you do like them, please feel free to tell me in comments. Your feedback would be great! (and motivating ^_-)

On that note, I wanted to see if any of you might be interested in becoming beta readers for some of the next stories. Being a beta reader isn’t difficult. All I need is for someone to read through the new posts and tell me what they think; if something needs improvement, or they just didn’t like it, etc. I don’t need a copy editor (I’m actually pretty good at that myself) but I’m looking more for people to give the story a once over and tell me if it seems to be on target and not going off in a nasty direction.

If you’re interested, feel free to post a comment, or message me through the About Me page.

Happy Friday the 13th!

November 13, 2015 by RenegadeScribe Leave a Comment

Fridaythe13thJust wanted to wish you the best on this superstitious day and wanted to tell you all what going on.

So far, I’m making quite a bit of headway in getting more of my original stories written and posted and as well I am working on the second prologue chapter of Yomuin-san wa Yuusha ja Arimasen node. I may be able to post it next week. I don’t know if I can keep up this speed (since I originally said it would be once per month) but I figure I would just post it as soon as I get it ready instead of just waiting on it. In the meantime I’d love to hear your feedback on Drow Story and Echoes. Please drop by and give them a read. Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

Phantom Star is coming along nicely and I’ll be writing the first chapter soon so expect to see some movement there.

Ideally, I will be writing for all these series and posting at least a couple of times a week. (at least that is the plan).

Have a great day, and beware the yandere in you life.

Almost there…

November 8, 2015 by RenegadeScribe Leave a Comment

ShawarmaAfterA quick update. All translation passes are done and I’m at the proofing/editing stage. Have some errands to run today, but barring those, the first prologue chapter will be up today. I hope you all enjoy it. In the meantime, take a look at some of my original stuff, like Drow Story. Would love to hear your thoughts on it.

Update: Turns out I was a bit optimistic. Looks like I’ll be posting it tomorrow instead.

Translation Status and How I’m Going About It

November 3, 2015 by RenegadeScribe Leave a Comment

CoffeeForThisI’m currently translating the first of the prologue chapters and plan to have it done sometime this week. Since this is my first attempt at translation, I’ve looked at how others do it and decided (tentatively) to use this as my process:

  • First Pass: This is where I do a bulk translation using MTL just to get a rough idea of what is going on context-wise (don’t worry, this is nowhere near the final product. More like a very early beginning). I make use of a couple of translation engines and look all of them over to see if there is a general pattern to it and then compare it to the original sentence.
  • Second Pass: I then go line by line and check with dictionary sources (and what I remember of Japanese which I took during university) to determine if what was produced in the first pass is salvageable or needs to be tossed out. This includes entirely re-translating the sentence manually if it is so far off the mark as to be unusable.
  • Proofreading/Editing Pass: After everything is translated, then I read through it to make sure it is intelligible and I’m not outputting Engrish. While I do believe in being accurate as far as translating, I believe even more strongly in making sure it reads well for English speakers. (You can blame Estelion (also known as The Grand Arbiter of Translation Ethics) for this philosophy, although I hope to become as proficient at it as he is in the future).
  • Final Check: This is to make sure that everything was done correctly and no errors somehow slipped through.
  • Post: And then I release the chapter out to the world like a plague and hope it spreads.

So with the above, you can see behind the curtain a bit. Currently I’m in the second pass stage and hope to be done by the end of the week. For those of you who wonder why I bother doing the first and second pass and not just do a second pass, the simple answer is time. Performing a bulk translation pass for the first run through saves me a lot of time later on. Granted, there are some sentences which are so garbled as to be useless but 80% of the material is usable hence the time savings.

I also wanted to say the above process will change as time goes by, I learn more Japanese and as I get better at it. As mentioned on the main translations page, I’m committing to at least release once a month, but I’m aiming for it to become weekly. It all depends of course on other things such as RL and my original works (which I will be posting at the same time as well and I hope you enjoy them in between the translated releases).

Now, some have suggested I go ahead and build a bit of a backlog before posting, but I will be posting this prologue as soon as I am done in order to show I’m committed to translating this series and to get feedback if I am doing it right.

I hope you enjoy reading it and look forward to your feedback!

Finally Finished!

October 29, 2015 by RenegadeScribe Leave a Comment

CosplayJust finished the last of the updates to the site so for the most part I am done with the blog re-design. Still a lot of other things that I could work on (like all of the nifty SEO settings) but fuck it, I don’t feel like continuing to tinker with that crap. It’s time to get writing and translating.

Right now, I have a variety of my original projects and the one translated project I’m working on, so I plan to make steady progress on them all. Especially since I have a stable platform to work on once more (the last blog suddenly stopped responding, which gave birth to this redesign).

Unlike the last blog, this one has a more definitive direction so I’ll be posting more often, especially for the translated project. I don’t want it to become yet another dead project. I’d hate to increase the workload for the fine folks at Raising the Dead (Hi Cyrojen and Co.!!).

So, here’s the plan (for now):

Yomuin-san wa Yuusha ja Arimasen node will be updated at least one chapter a month. I don’t believe in putting up MTL crap so it will be done by hand. As mentioned on the translations page, this is a one man show and most of my effort will be on my own stories so if I have the time I’ll do more but I won’t make a greater commitment than that. Yes, I know it’s slow but at least someone will be working on the story and it will be a decent translation. If you want it to come along faster, feel free to contact me.

Original works will be updated as I write, edit and proofread them. I don’t have a consistent schedule for them as of yet since some of them are being re-written since the older forms of them aren’t something I really want to see the light of day. I can say that they should be updated more frequently since more effort will be going into writing them. I hope you’ll give them a chance while waiting for the next chapter of Youmin-san.

I’ll post other things from time to time here as it strikes my fancy. You can be sure to find the most recent updates on what is happening here under the Messages area.

Thanks for reading, and I hope to hear from ya in the future.
